I’ve never liked taking direction, counseling or getting help from others. This mentality led me to two epic business failures where I lost everything! Each of the failures was a direct result of my being a lone ranger. In other words, my huge ego blinded me!
When you fall into this trap it is easy to be deceived. You start to believe your own headlines and falsely think you are always right. This is an easy process that takes place every day in business. We tend to be everything for our businesses and professions and that isolates us. Eventually, you become a Dictator of your business and only surround yourself with people who agree with you!
When I was going through this process (twice) I was blind to my shortsightedness. The only way I can explain it is like being an alcoholic who refuses to admit they have a problem. I truly believed I was right and that it was everyone else who had a problem. I was unteachable!
You can become your own worst enemy and that is why I now surround myself with a team of advisers/mentors. Their main job is to protect me from me! Now I want people around me that disagree with me and challenge my decisions. There are still times when I don’t take their advice but it is rare.
If you want to be successful then YOU must submit to a team of mentors. You must find people who have what you want to have; people who excel in their industry and skill set, and people who you trust and respect.
Once you find them, do not allow yourself to get offended by their advice or direction. Their job is to care more about your future than your feelings! That is why NO friends and Family – they care more about your feelings. Good Mentors are there to protect you from you!
Having a team of advisers is not a sign of weakness but a sign of strength! It takes wisdom to know that everyone needs help to be successful.
